Prosecution Drops One Charge

After a three day recess, court resumed Monday morning in Bellefonte. Proceedings began with arguments from both sides, after the defense asked for most of the 52 charges to be dropped, citing lack of evidence after hearing from all  of the known alleged victims.

The jury was not in the room when Sandusky’s attorney, Karl Rominger, argued to dismiss many of the 52 charges in what has seemingly been a weekly process for the defense over the last several weeks.

“He was known to many people in the community, and there are many witnesses to bring forward as potential alibis,” Rominger said, citing the lack of specificity in dates of the alleged crimes. “It’s very difficult to defend when the charges include long periods of time without specific information.”

The prosecution rebutted, saying that the jury has been presented with enough evidence to determine the case for themselves. “Think the evidence in this court clearly paints the picture of serial abuse,” the prosecution said. However, the prosecution did withdraw Charge 33 — Unlawful Contact with a Minor — because it was not a law when the alleged crime occurred against Victim 7. That brings the number of charges against Sandusky to 51.

Cleland denied the motion to drop the charges. The prosecution says that they have one more witness to call before resting.
